Welcome to Protégé

Dear Graduate Student,

You are invited to participate in the Palo Alto AWIS Mentoring Program for women science and engineering graduate students at Stanford University. The Mentoring Program is designed to provide support for women pursuing a career in science, and has been working with the Office of Graduate Affairs and the Office of Women in Medicine and Medical Sciences since 1991. Many women in science feel isolated, particularly during their graduate studies. Isolation, lack of contact with peers, and lack of feedback can cause difficulty with self-evaluation and engender unrealistic expectations. Contact with other women who have gone through the training process often reveals new options and boosts morale. Recent studies show that having a supportive mentor greatly increases the likelihood of a woman staying in her field.

Our Mentoring Program will provide opportunities to pair each participating student with a local woman scientist based on the information provided by both mentors and students. Pairings will be based on career interests, a match of protégé questions and mentor experience, and shared values. Some years we have a limited number of available mentors, so pairings with students may be made on a "first come, first serve" basis.

If you are interested in working with a mentor, please submit a Protégé Profile Form (please see link below). Pairing occurs in November each year. After our mentor pool is used up, we will continue to recruit additional mentors based on the needs of students making requests. Returning your form early ensures that we will know the level of interest and can recruit additional mentors to match students' needs. In addition to making pair matches, we will have quarterly events for all the participants in the program. Should we run out of mentors, we will try to match individuals with e-mail mentors. Additionally, all interested students are invited to our evening events.

Please download the Protégé Form, fill it out, and return it by email (mentoring_awis at yahoo dot com) to the Mentoring Committee.

We look forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,

The Mentoring Committee
