The British Consulate-General in San Francisco seeks a Science and Innovation Officer for a temporary contract to join a busy Consulate team, whose Consular district covers northern California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nevada and Alaska. The job offers a great opportunity to have a positive impact on UK-US scientific collaboration, to meet key figures in UK and US science and to enhance the UK's science, innovation and technology transfer expertise. The successful candidate will be part of a network of Science and Innovation officers at British Consulates throughout the US co-ordinated by the British Embassy in Washington.
The main purpose of the job is to represent UK science and innovation interests as part of a Network whose objectives are:
* To promote access to and sharing of scientific expertise, resources and facilities through international scientific collaboration and exchange;
* To strengthen the UK's innovation capacity through international research and development (R&D) investment, R&D partnerships and technology transfer;
* To inform effective domestic and international policymaking and leadership based on the best available science
* To use science and innovation as a tool for influence in an increasingly globalised world and to forge strategic alliances.
Reporting to the Consul, Science and Innovation, the successful candidate's main role will be to:
* Develop a wide range of high-level contacts within industry, academia, and research bodies in areas of particular relevance, such as stem cell research, climate change, energy, and high tech areas.
* Provide advice on Science and Innovation policy and best practice for UK stakeholders and report on S&I policy development in the consular region.
* Communicate UK science policy to US policymakers and the regional community.
* Identify emerging technologies in the US that play to UK advantages and transfer through technology partnerships, research collaborations, etc.
* Identify and support UK-US research and wealth creation collaboration alongside UK Trade and Investment colleagues.
* Initiate and implement public diplomacy activities, in collaboration with Press & Public Affairs teams, to promote UK science and innovation.
* Manage science-related visits both from and to the UK.
* Support the S&I Network effort across the US, delivering the US network's objectives in the consulate region.
Minimum qualifications and experience:
* Possess a science education at post-graduate level, with a good understanding of the research and development base in California and surrounding states
* have knowledge of UK science and research capabilities and strengths
* be highly motivated, organised and resourceful
* be an excellent self-starter, capable of working with limited guidance
* proven ability to work to demanding standards and deadlines
* have outstanding interpersonal skills and be able to interact effectively with members of the public, the science community and senior government and corporate contacts
* possess excellent communication skills
* have ability to work effectively with others, both in the Consulate team and across the science network be ready to travel, both around the US and occasionally internationally

Scientific Supervisor Responsibilities:
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with strong "translational" interests to join our efforts in developing small-molecule and antibody-based cancer therapeutics for hematologic malignancies.
