Overview: Is there a better way to deliver drugs than to ingest or inject them? Can we administer drugs locally instead of systemically? How can we meet the challenges of ophthalmic delivery? Support the AWIS Interns
Every summer, the Association of Women in Science (AWIS) National Office welcomes promising undergraduate and graduate students to join us for a few months as paid interns. While in Washington, DC, these students will gain valuable career experience while simultaneously helping us move the AWIS mission forward. As you already know AWIS strives to achieve equity and full participation for women in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. Your donation will provide our interns with support for their dedication and hard work.

Past AWIS interns have gainedin valuable experience through participation in a multitude of enriching opportunities. AWIS has numerous intern opportunities designed to fit each individual's educational goals. Interns have had the opportunity to work closely with the Executive Director, Publications Manager, Web Site Administrator, and AWIS Committee Chairs. They have acted as liaisons to other national organizations, attended Congressional hearings, followed judicial decisions, composed press releases, worked on membership development, written for AWIS Magazine, implemented programs for special projects, and participated in grant writing. AWIS interns have gone on to attend graduate or medical school as well as to achieve Fulbright Fellowships, Congressional Fellowships, and pursue careers in industry and academia.

We receive over 150 application seach year for fewer than 10 available positions. Our aim this year is to raise$25,000 over the next three months to offer the interns a modest stipend, which helps to defray the costs of living in Washington, DC. 100% of the funds are dedicated to intern stipends. Please visit our web site for an in-depth look at the 2003 interns and their experience at AWIS http://www.awis.org/resource/internshipfund.html

We are also seeking support for an endowed internship to honor the memory of Dr. Barbara Lazarus. As many of you know, this past year AWIS lost a dear friend and a tireless leader for women in science and engineering, Barbara B. Lazarus. Dr. Lazarus, an Associate Provost of Carnegie Mellon University, died last July due to complications from cancer. She was 57 yeas old. We would like to raise $30,000 to endow an internship in her honor. This would become an annual "Barbara Lazarus Internship." For more information please visit http://www.awis.org/resource/barbaralazarus.pdf.

Wewould like to get feedback on the mentoring book 'A Hand Up: Women Mentoring Women in Science'. This book was initially published as part of the AWIS Mentoring Project and distributed to chapters and purchased by many members over the last decade. We are in the process of updating 'A Hand Up' and would like to receive comments on how people have used the books either in their chapters, institutions, or individually. We would also like to hear any suggestions you might have for the revision. The first edition was a great success and with your help we hope to make the revised version even better!**Please address your replies to Emily Singer at singer@awis.org** Thank you. We appreciate your input!
